Tattoo Removal
What It Is
Laser tattoo removal uses very rapid pulses of light to break tattoo ink into fragments small enough for your body to carry away. The tattoo lightens a little further after every visit, over a course that usually spans many months. Fading is the honest description, because not every tattoo clears completely.
Great for:
- Body tattoos you no longer want
- Older black and dark blue ink
- Lightening a tattoo before a cover-up
- Older cosmetic tattoos, following a test spot
How It Works
Tattoo ink absorbs the laser light far more readily than the skin surrounding it, so each pulse shatters the pigment while leaving nearby tissue largely undisturbed. Ink is deposited in layers, so a single session reaches only part of it. Black and dark blue respond most easily, while green, red and yellow take considerably longer.
Your visit:
- We assess the tattoo and ask about your skin and health.
- A small test area may be treated first, then reviewed later.
- The area is cleansed and numbed, and protective eyewear is fitted.
- The laser passes over, then we soothe, dress and cover the area.
What to Expect
- Time: approximately 45 to 90 minutes, including time for numbing
- How it feels: our most intense treatment, which is why numbing comes first
- Downtime: tenderness for several days, with scabbing for up to two weeks
- Results: fading develops over the six to eight weeks following each session
- How often: sessions six to eight weeks apart, continuing for several months
Good to know: this treatment is not suitable during pregnancy or while nursing. Tell us about any medications, allergies, skin conditions or moles near the tattoo at your consultation so we can plan around them.
